I watch a lot of movies and I don’t hold them exclusive in any way to my thinking about fine art.
A new discovery for me is Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The actors he selects have very interesting faces and the hues of his films play a large role in the mood conveyed. He uses sepia very effectively in “A Very Long Engagement” and “Delicatessen,” as well as he does the vivid and playful saturation in “Amelie.” Also, the way his characters act amidst his scenery really strikes me as very Breugel-esque. There is some cartoonish nature behind his whole prism of reality, as if he’s not trying too hard to hide the fact that there is a stage and a set beneath all the artifice of the film. But really, all that matters is that I likey mucho and his stories are touching while surreal.
