Sometimes I stumble across images after I’ve completed a work that really give me pause because they seem so similar. I tend to either feel amusedly validated or utterly deflated. Here are a few for your comparison. The thumbnails lead to the full images.
The summer I saw the “Legend of the True Cross” fresco cycle by Piero Della Francesca I had just completed “Tit Bags” and some other delights. When I saw Eve up there with her deflated sacks I knew there was a place for me in this world.
More “Tit Bags!” I couldn’t believe that my impossible vain old lady from my modern allegorical spin on the “ages of man” had come to life.
He-llo! I almost died from joy when I spotted this dangling sack in the same fresco cycle as Eve’s sagging tits above. Why Piero, why? Directly, not much to do with my art, but in spirit it represents the core of my artistic motivation.
I nearly pooped my knickers when I saw this one. Serious. Could there be a greater coincidence (or conspiracy) in its similarity to “Dread and Desire“?
This one deflated me. I was going to make another Showgirl, literally just like this. I had even been browsing ebay and antique stores for months for the perfect antique cage. I was going to take the photo in a real sized room…and….and it was gonna be awesome. Probs won’t do it now. Lost my steam.
Lastly, I saw this image when I followed a link from my site stats that showed someone came to my page from a google search for “showgirl.” I never saw my own “Ultimate Showgirl” in the search results but I did find this image to be eerily similar.
So, is this like the bit about leaving monkeys in a room with typewriters long enough and they’ll write Shakespeare? What?
