Facing Expectations explores gender roles as a social construction; not simply a synonym for sex, gender can be imposed upon us or chosen by us. It may be perceived as a skin or a deeply rooted identity. This exhibition investigates the way artists deal with gender in their work through concept, material, and viewer perception. The featured artists approach the feminine, the masculine, and the androgynous with sensitivity and boldness. Each artist, from a variety of disciplines, examines gender through objects and signifiers, behavioral expectations, commercialism and commodification, race and ethnicity, and/or personal and individual meaning. The word gender is rooted in Latin genus, meaning “kind or sort.” It is human nature to categorize the world around us. Facing Expectations questions the desire to simplify the complex when we may not be so easily sorted. Curated by Sarah Gross and Fonda Yoshimoto.
